There is a point in One Assassination Under God – Chapter 2 where the language of survival finally becomes the language of retaliation. “The Arsonist” is that point. The song is not simply about having survived an attempt to destroy you. It is about what happens afterward, when the person who has been burned decides that the fire did not finish him and that the scars it left behind have become part of his strength. Manson himself described the song as the moment when the narrative of the two chapters “crystallizes into a battle stance,” and, referring to the painting he created for it, said that the “burned scar tissue” had formed into armor. On April 8th, a total solar eclipse took place over a substantial portion of the skies of Central and North America, and with this event came new photos of Marilyn Manson and his wife Lindsay.

Marilyn Manson also shared on his Instagram page two photos taken by Lindsay, of him holding a bouquet of flowers, which he captioned with: "The moon has now eclipsed the sun, the angel has spread his wings…", which are the well-known lyrics from "Cryptorchid" and "Antichrist Superstar".

The total solar eclipse is the perfect time to reintroduce these lyrics, which evoke the imagery of Manson's complete transformation leading toward the revolution, as was previously featured in Holy Wood. We have seen this in the previous imagery over the past year or so, especially with an image Manson and Lindsay posted this past Valentine's Day only in their Instagram stories of what looks to me like an angel overlooking a horizon in which an eclipse has taken place and the angel is spreading his wings.
