The Spoof That Became a Reality: How Evan Rachel Wood and Darren Criss Became Friends in 2014

Evan Rachel Wood and Darren Criss hit the stage together in the Off-Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors on January 30th, and this Sunday, March 31st, their performances are coming to an end. On February 20th, the pair appeared together on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna to promote their show and talk about how their friendship began a decade ago in 2014 and has continued strong till today.

But what was it that brought Evan and Darren together in 2014? It was a spoof on the show Funny or Die of the Tom Hank's movie Big, but in this version of the film the male lead role is played by a female, Evan Rachel Wood. Darren Criss is the adult who plays her love interest and eventually finds out he’s had sexual relations with a 13-year-old girl aged by magic.

What is interesting on top of this, in the 2003 movie Thirteen, Evan played a 13-year-old who wanted to be older and in one scene she had sex with an older man.

When Big came out in 1988, it was a huge success and few were those who did not see the humor in a 13-year-old boy magically becoming a man and falling in love with a woman. As the years and the decades passed, some people began watching the movie in a way it was not intended to be watched, where the character of Tom Hanks, despite looking like a man, was in actuality a young teenager and his adult love interest, played by Elizabeth Perkins, was in fact a pedophile. In 2021, Elizabeth Perkins was asked about this disturbing interpretation of the film, and she replied: "I’ve been called a pedophile. You know, I get it. The only thing I can say is, it was a different time. It was the Eighties; it was not viewed through that lens and I get that it is being viewed through that lens now."

Asked if there were any concerns raised at the time that the film was made, Perkins said: “If you look at it in the movie, it was sort of used as a joke. Here he is the next morning, the elevator door opens and he bounces out like: ‘Wow, I just had my first sexual experience.’” She added: “It was a setup for a joke that today would not be acceptable.”

With this in mind, we come to the Funny or Die spoof of Big with Evan Rachel Wood and Darren Criss in 2014, where the gender roles are reversed to highlight in a humorous way the pedophile aspect of the movie Big. Notable quotes in the spoof are when Darren Criss says: "I fucked a magical child, I'm gonna go to jail," and: "Magic isn't a defense you can use in court."

This was released in November 2014, a few months after Evan says she began to "realize" she had been raped, while filming a brutal rape scene for Into the Forest. Then two years later, in November 2016, Evan publicly revealed she had been raped twice on two occasions by two men. Early on, Evan didn't make age a factor in her rape. It wasn't until April 2019 that age became a factor when Evan testified in front of the California Senate Public Safety Committee, and began her speech saying: "When I was a teenager, I met a Man. Before meeting him, I only had two long term relationships in my high school years — with teenage boys, very close to my age...  I was smart, but a smart 18-year-old is still an 18-year-old, and I was completely naive to the red flags he was showing me since the day we met." With this, she was giving us more clues indicating that it was Manson she was referring to, but there is little doubt that this emphasis was based on the then recent allegations against R. Kelly, having cited the January 2019 documentary Surviving R. Kelly as an inspiration to her. We see this issue further highlighted in her own 2022 documentary, Phoenix Rising, where Evan refers to her 18-19 year old self as a "child" and through anime is depicted as a little prepubescent girl in contrast to a monstrous older Marilyn Manson.

Thus, the 2014 spoof became a reality for Evan Rachel Wood in 2019, though in reverse. In 2019, Evan came forward publicly and said that, although she was an 18 year old legal adult, in reality she was a child, therefore Marilyn Manson groomed her like a pedophile cult leader and manipulated her innocent and naive little mind to strategically be a victim of his abuse. Inspired by this, similar claims began to be made against Manson by other women. It was for charges of trafficking and pedophilia that Manson was reported to the FBI in 2020. In one of her latest interviews from 2023, Evan even went so far as to suggest that Manson's attraction to her being flat chested was a sign of him being a pedophile, despite his longest previous relationships being with women who were considered ample breasted.

Did Evan use magic to make her 18 year old legal adult self into a child? No, though it might as well have been the explanation and it would probably hold more validity than what the facts are. The fact is, Evan chose to define her 18 and 19 year old self as a child because she wanted to hype up the charges against her alleged abuser and make herself as innocent and helpless as possible without an ability to consent to any of her actions and choices. The more Evan can make herself a victim by piling on allegations, the more powerful her testimony becomes by adding one more negative label on the person she is accusing.
