Before her breakthrough role in Thirteen (2003), perhaps Evan Rachel Wood's biggest movie role was Practical Magic (1998), for which she was nominated for Best Supporting Young Actress at the 20th Young Artist Awards. In 2018 it was the 20th anniversary of Practical Magic , and since then fans had been calling for a sequel with the old cast returning to reprise their roles. For a few years now, every Halloween season, Evan has been posting about Practical Magic , promoting for it to be watched. It became obvious that she knew a sequel was probably on the horizon, and she wanted to make sure she was a part of it. In 2024 it was finally confirmed that a sequel to Practical Magic is on the way, which in May 2025 was announced to be released on September 18, 2026. These announcements came with the news that the two leading actresses from the beloved original, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, would be reprising their roles and be the film's producers. Then this past Friday, on July 11th 2025, it was announced that Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing would also be reprising their roles. On the same day it was also announced that new faces were joining the cast, including Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña and Solly McLeod. In a statement on July 11th's castings, the Practical Magic filmmaking team said:
“Twenty-five years ago, Sally, Gillian, Aunt Jet and Aunt Franny flew off the pages of Alice Hoffman’s beloved novel and into theaters around the world, and we are thrilled to bring the Owens family back to the big screen with Joey, Lee, Maisie, Solly and Xolo joining the next chapter in our story. The enduring affection for these characters has been our inspiration to deliver the next installment in the Owens’ story to new fans, and those who’ve been with us since the beginning.”
Hours after these announcements on July 11th, Evan Rachel Wood posted the following message in her Instastories:

Here Evan seems to be quite honest that she was neither asked to reprise her role in Practical Magic 2 nor did they accept her offer to do even one scene or say one line, and that the filmmaking team have chosen to re-cast the role she played when she was ten years old. In other words, Evan practically begged to be part of Practical Magic 2, a role she seemingly has been wanting to reprise for years, and she was rejected.
It's unknown what the storyline of Practical Magic 2 will be, though some say it is the sequel to the book which focuses on Evan's character. Perhaps then it requires a younger actress to play Evan's character from the original, and a 37 year old Evan just wouldn't fit.
However, if they really wanted Evan in the movie, and now they think she is too old, they could have created a new character for her. Her rejection from this role, which fans of the original film for the most part really wanted and hoped for after the other main female characters were announced to be returning, says a lot about Evan's role in Hollywood at the moment. Not only does Evan constantly and harshly criticize Hollywood on social media, but she is known for being outspoken and accusatory, and thus has become sort of a liability to work with. The only roles she has been able to play the past few years are roles where she has like-minded friends associated with independent films or off-Broadway productions. Westworld can't even get a conclusion after multiple seasons. It makes you wonder if Evan is indeed blacklisted in Hollywood, and what this means for her future as an actress.
Deadline reports that Joey King, who is 25, is playing Sally’s daughter in the sequel, which is already in production, though the outlet did not specify which daughter. In the original film, Sally Owens (Sandra Bullock) had an older daughter Kylie Owens (Evan Rachel Wood), but also had a younger daughter, Antonia Owens (played by Alexandra Artrip). Artrip is the only other child from the original movie who could have returned, however she left Hollywood as a child, now goes by the name Lexi, and as of 2024 the former child star works as an account executive for an advertising company, per her LinkedIn.
However, it does look like King may indeed be playing Kylie Owens, Evan’s character, because she shared photos of herself with flaming red hair, just like Evan had in the 1998 movie. “There’s a little witch in all of us,” King said in an Instagram post on July 11th, which is a popular line from both the book and the movie.
