Marilyn Manson and wife Lindsay attend Enfants Riches Déprimés event at Maxfield LA

Los Angeles brand Enfants Riches Déprimés is currently showcasing their Spring 2024 collection at Maxfield LA, and the event was attended by Marilyn Manson and his wife Lindsay on April 17th. On March 16th, Manson posted photos on his social media wearing the Enfants Riches Déprimés brand, which is French for "Depressed Rich Kids". Enfants Riches Déprimés is a Los Angeles and Paris based luxury fashion brand founded in 2012 by the conceptual artist Henri Alexander Levy, who has created a French punk streetwear line based on the movements of the late 1970s and Japanese Avant-garde movements of the 1980s. One of the core precepts of the brand is high price points, with T-shirts ranging on average from $500 to $1,000, and haute couture jackets priced as high as $95,000. ERD consistently utilizes the business model of artificial scarcity. In this regard, all styles are sold on an extremely exclusive basis, and thus in relatively small quantities. The Relationship of Marilyn Manson and Evan Rachel Wood (Part 7: December 2009 - August 2010)

The first photo of Manson and Evan engaged, the next day holding hands as they arrive at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, France on December 22, 2009.

"We spent a year apart, and I think that year was incredibly important; and no matter who I was with, nothing came close - nothing, and I missed him every day."

Manson and Evan Resume Their Relationship

When Marilyn Manson and Evan Rachel Wood broke up in October of 2008, Evan spoke about how their careers were leading them on different paths, with him working on a new album and going on tour for it and her needing to move to New York for work, and she mentioned there was a possibility of a reunion in the future. During this time Manson worked on his album The High End of Low and toured for it until December 21, 2009 with his final show in Paris. Evan also did what she needed to do as far as her career was concerned. During their time apart they very briefly reunited in February 2009, and had other brief relationships as well. Throughout this time Evan did not speak negatively about Manson or her experience with him, though Manson was very vocal of his heartbreak through the creation of a semi-autobiographical/semi-fictional story reflected in The High End of Low album, videos and his promotion of the album which he viewed as a film equally as much. Using her real name, he described the violent things he fantasized wanting to do to her, which was a result of her rejecting his proposal for marriage after she promised to always be with him. By December 2009, they were both single and winding down their work, and finally came back together again.

On December 3, 2009, it was revealed in an interview with Metal Hammer that Marilyn Manson to his joy was released from Interscope Records, had gotten back into a relationship with Evan Rachel Wood, and was currently writing new songs for an upcoming album while on tour. Apparently Evan was not phased at all by Manson's remarks nor by the violent portrayal of a woman that looked like her in the video for "Running to the Edge of the World". Till this day she has not commented on these things and chooses to ignore it all, which indicates she had a clear understanding of why Manson did what he did and his true intentions as an artist creating something that did not reflect reality. Evan has further commented about Manson that "we have the same sense of humor," and this showed at that time. When Manson commented on this to Metal Hammer, he explained:

"I think I’m not afraid to be me. Sometimes you feel awkward being what you’re best at, you feel like you have to be something new. But I think that a lot of people will agree that me being me at my best [is what] I need to be. I think that that really paid off because I’m back with Evan. That's kind of breaking news. You can be the first one to say that."

This announcement apparently shocked the media, who in their reporting of this news all referenced Manson's prior comments about Evan after their first breakup. No one seemed happy about the reunion, with their comments reflecting that they took Manson literally when he said he wanted to smash Evan's head with a sledgehammer. In the interview with Metal Hammer Manson also commented how his next album would probably be more romantic and self-abusive.

At some point during this time Evan joined Manson for his final tour dates in Europe.

Evan's engagement ring

Manson and Evan Are Engaged

On January 6 it was reported widely in the press that Manson and Evan became engaged in Paris on January 4, 2010. E! News confirmed that the two indeed got engaged in Paris, but shot down reports that the engagement happened in January 2010. Instead, Manson proposed with a ring and a rose while performing on stage in Paris on December 21, 2009. The moment can be seen on video while Manson was performing the song "Devour" and singing the lines "And I'll love you, if you let me" as he hands the rose to Evan. That the engagement took place on December 21 and not January 4 is shown by the fact that on January 5, 2010, Marilyn Manson celebrated his forty-first birthday at the Whiskey Bar in Los Angeles, California with friends Twiggy, Steve Macauley and Fred Sablan of Goon Moon.

The fact that Manson and Evan got engaged so quickly after their reunion, apparently within a few weeks, seems to confirm that what Evan reported to the media in October 2008 was true regarding why they broke up, though both never mentioned his first proposal that she rejected apparently for career reasons, feeling it was not the right time for her. Now seemed to be the right time.

After the two became engaged in 2010, Evan got her third tattoo related to Manson, of a heart intertwined with an infinity symbol, behind her right ear. Her first Manson related tattoo was from February 14, 2008 when they got matching tattoo's of a black heart, she on her hip and he on his wrist. The second tattoo is of a 15 behind her left ear matching Manson's.

Manson and Evan in Greece

Now that Manson and Evan were back together and engaged, they seemed to have kept a pretty low profile together, though Evan also seems to have been busy with her career and Manson with art exhibits among other things. The next time we see them together is when on April 28th-May 2nd in Athens, Greece there was an exhibit of Marilyn Manson paintings, titled Hell, Etc. On April 28, 2010, Marilyn Manson and fiancee Evan Rachel Wood gave a short passing interview at the opening of Manson's art exhibit in Athens. The interview is interesting because it is rare to get an interview of them together, as well as for its revelations on how their engagement life together was.

At the 3:00 minute mark there is an exchange with Evan that is difficult to understand, but I have transcribed it below (I can also read and understand Greek to confirm the translation in the video) because it is an important admission by her in light of later comments:

Interviewer to Evan: "You were great on True Blood."

Evan: "Oh, thank you."

MM: "She likes to bite me all the time at home."

Evan: "It hurts so good."

Interviewer to Evan: "I didn't expect you to come to Greece."

Evan: "Really?!"

Manson: "She's chained [to me]."

Evan: "Chained."

And at the 5:43 mark, when asked about their daily life together, Evan says:

"It's hard to get him to come to bed, because he's always creating, you know."

The overall impression one gets from the video is their compatibility, mutual understanding, closeness and common sense of humor, and they both look like they are having a good time and smiling.

You can see the entire interview here. Another interview from this exhibition, more directed at Manson, can be seen here.

"WOW"  Music Video

On May 11th, 2010 a music video for "WOW" was released to Manson's MySpace account. It was directed by Marilyn Manson and consists of nothing more than a two second clip being looped for about six minutes. The clip shows Evan Rachel Wood, in make-up reminiscent of the Black Dahlia, playing with the strap of her dress. According to the video's description it was filmed in 2008, about a year before the album's release, and was a "torture production technique [Manson] used to write the song with the boys." Presumably this means the video existed before the song itself. Oddly the video continues for over a minute longer than the song. It makes sense the video was made in 2008, since Evan had darker hair at that time from her work on The Wrestler.

Evan's consent to be in this music video shows her understanding of this album and the whole The High End of Low era as being more about art than anything else. Her lack of comments on this to this day further add to this fact. Also, that she dressed as the Black Dahlia adds to the fact that she and Manson had similar interests at this time that could get pretty dark, contrary to what she would admit now. Who is more of a poster child of rape and abuse than the Black Dahlia?

On the Set of Mildred Pierce

On May 28, 2010 Marilyn Manson and Evan Rachel Wood appeared on the set of the then new series Mildred Pierce in New York City, which Evan appeared in and also had her first nude scene in.

Of interest is the fact that they both look happy together, holding hands, and Evan even wearing her signature Lolita sunglasses. The reason I post about her nude scene is because later Evan will claim she was just a child at this time being manipulated and groomed by Manson, but the fact she chose to do a revealing nude scene indicates her ability to make an adult decision for herself that was risky. She also claimed to be scarring herself at this time on her forearm in suicide attempts to drive Manson away, but these scars would have been visible at this time, and no one reported anything nor can they be seen.

Evan Rachel Wood and the Gucci Campaign

In June of 2010 Evan Rachel Wood became the face of Gucci‘s new women’s fragrance, her first perfume campaign. She would travel to Italy to do a photoshoot for this campaign as well as a commercial together with the actor Chris Evans. The campaign emphasized sensuality and featured a steamy sex scene between the two actors, but Evan would post photos from this shoot in 2019 to lead us to believe she was depressed and in a state of great pain and abuse. Strong evidence suggests this was not in fact the case, and a separate post will be made to detail why.

Manson on Celebrity Ghost Stories

On July 23, 2010 Manson made an appearance on Celebrity Ghost Stories. Here is a transcript of his appearance as well as the video. What is of interest in this appearance is that Manson is clearly making up this story and presents a fabricated account of a paranormal experience he had based on what viewers could imagine would be true with him. You can tell the story is fabricated because a) it is way over the top and oddly detailed, and 2) he talks about summoning evil spirits using the Necronomicon, which is a fictional grimoire (textbook of magic) appearing in stories by the horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft that is not real.

The significance of this has to do with the fact that Manson very often fabricates stories about himself, either entirely or just by exaggerating true stories. This plays a role in understanding many of the things Manson says about himself regarding sex and violence, especially in his "autobiography" The Long Hard Road Out of Hell and during The High End of Low era. Manson critics take all these things at face value, as literal and true to try to paint him out to be a monster in real life separate from the character he is projecting. In reality he is just making things up or trying to be funny and witty to play up his public image and brand, mainly for marketing purposes to a very gullible media. Manson himself has admitted this. With his appearance on Celebrity Ghost Stories, we have an instance where the whole story is fabricated, probably just to get a paycheck. This would be similar to actor and radio host Jay Thomas, who also appeared on the show twice and admitted he completely made up his paranormal story in order to get the $10,000 he was offered.

Manson and Evan Break Off Their Engagement

After being engaged for a little more than seven months, for unknown reasons Manson and Evan broke off their engagement in early August of 2010. Nothing else was said about it in the press. Apparently the relationship had run its course and they discovered they weren't right for each other, and this time it seemed very much to be mutual. Us Magazine reported through an anonymous source that they broke up because they fought a lot, but anonymous sources should not be trusted. Further revelations would come later.

Within a week or so the newly single Manson hit the town on August 14th, a Saturday night, dining at L.A’s STK and clubbing at next door Boudoir with a group including Twiggy and former Playmate of the Year Colleen Shannon, whom reports said was with Manson but no one confirmed. In fact, this is the first time Manson was seen sitting next to his current wife, Lindsay Usich. On August 15, 2010, an image by Lindsay appeared on Manson's Myspace wall. After this they were seen on and off together until she was referred to as Manson's girlfriend in the March 2012 issue of Revolver, which also mentioned a reference to a new painting by Manson featuring her.

Concluding remarks

Though this series now comes to a close, this is only a foundation presentation for what is to come. The purpose of this series was to offer clarifications on certain matters regarding the relationship of Marilyn Manson and Evan Rachel Wood, and get the timeline correct for the context of future statements and comments, which are often confusing to place. What we understand from what was reported at this time was that Manson and Evan kept their relationship private as much as possible, offering hints here and there to keep us up to date on what was going on. They were both very busy while they were together, focused on their careers, and don't seem to have been alone together that often. Rumors and false information in the media often portrayed Manson negatively and Evan more as a victim who was a bit of a weirdo herself, but Evan always tried to defend Manson and her relationship. There were no signs of abuse during their time together, contrary to what later reports from various sources would have us believe. Though their relationship together ended in August 2010, they are still very much a part of each other's lives, not in a positive sense and this time more publicly, and this we will move on to examine in future posts, among many other things.
